Pembroke Pocket Garden is a pocket of space in the heart of Walworth for people to get together, experiment with growing and sharing food, and have creative fun along the way… The container garden is located within the grounds of the community centre Pembroke House, and is entirely what the community makes of it. The space has lots of potential, not only as a place for experimenting with ways of growing food, but also as a venue for events, exhibitions, pop up cafes, outdoor cinema, workshops and more… Pembroke Pocket Garden welcomes new folk all year around, so if you are interested in getting involved and being part of bringing this community space to life, please get in touch by contacting pembrokecommunitygarden@gmail.com

Getting Drenched

It's been raining LOTS this week so I am well-watered.

Kathleen and Shelagh came by on Saturday 27th August and we were hoping for a sunny day.

Here's Shelagh having a think about what to do first while enjoying one of Kathleen's lavender biscuits - made with my lavender!

They decided that some of my boxes have grown as much as they can. This purslane has already cropped and we need to use the box for a new plant, so this one is going to help by going on our compost - to help make soil for next year.

But what's this hiding under my courgettes?

Are they edible?

Kathleen harvested some marrowfat peas

What a delicious crop

We were going well and then the skies opened and monsoon style rain forced my friends to take shelter.

Oh well, the rain is very good for my boxes

Sieving, seeds and Scandanavian reporters!

Today began with an unexpected visit from some scandavian journalists who were interested in seeing what the youth in this area are up to, following the riots of the last few days...

Here's Patrick, our youth club director, speaking with them.

Besides the swedish reporters, the session began like most others.... with watering!

The gardeners then put some organic fertiliser on the fruiting plants, such as this yellow plum tomato...

And this cucumber...isn't it getting big?

And took some photos of the insects our plants are attracting, like this bee on the borage...

Some of my plants are now beginning to produce seeds, like this nasturcium:

And this sunflower will soon be producing seeds too..

After attending the capital growth training this weekend (http://www.capitalgrowth.org/training/) Shelagh will be able to share new knowledge on how to collect seeds from me...

Other work that went on today included sieving:

Drinking tea and chatting (an important part of any community garden!)

And experimenting with exterior decoration!

The first Wednesday of the month means FEAST time!

But in order for the community to reap the fruits (and vegetables) of my harvest, they put in some work!

Look here at Dave, our local carpenter. Today he finished putting the compost bin together.
The trellises also needed tending too...Those beans are just desperate to grow up and they need some helping hands to do so...

The soil doesn't get sieved by itself either - here's Shelagh hard at work...

Here the little Tangs are helping to pot on more plants by filling containers with the magic soil mix.

After tending to trellises, pots, compost heaps and more, we finally got onto harvesting...

Here are some of my tatties and tomatoes! Don't they look delicious?

And mixed british salad leaves

But before they are eaten, they need to be washed!

And then prepared into salads...

Here is some mixed italian leaves complete with cherry tomatoes and spring onions - all home grown!

And here is some kohl rabi and yellow carrot coleslaw!

What a feast eh...?
